WIFI has become something that a lot of people can't seem to live without, a recent study by Iconic Displays found that 75% of people say 1 week without Wi-Fi would leave them grumpier than 1 week without coffee. Bearing this in mind and that 94% of people cite WIFI as the most important amenity, it's no surprise that a futurist and the CEO of Purple have made a bold prediction that WIFI will kill mobile networks by 2025. Purple CEO Gavin Wheeldon and Digital Futurist Mike Ryan believe that mobile networks will fail to withhold under increasing data consumption driven by 5G and unlimited data plans.

The WIFI market is rapidly increasing and in today's world, it's incredibly easy to find a WIFI Hotspot whenever you need a connection. In fact, there are almost 12 million commercial and community WIFI Hotspots in the UK, the majority of them offering free access. Did you know, 90% of people have a mobile device in reach 100% of the time (Pew Research Center).

"People in urban areas are already using WiFi on their mobile devices even when they think they are using 4G,” comments Mike Ryan, founder of Fusion Futures. “In the next few years, wearable devices, such as digital contact lenses, will replace mobile phones and data usage will increase.”

The global WIFI market is expected to be worth $33.6 billion by 2020 and it's estimated that there will be one WIFI Hotspot on the planet for every eight humans by next year. Wheeldon says: "Increasingly, it is the glue that holds our connected world together, satisfying the appetites of Netflix and Spotify bingers, who use their phones in a very different way to a decade ago."
